as a New Board Member

Santa Fe, New Mexico –The Cancer Foundation for New Mexico (CFFNM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Thao Marquez, a highly esteemed colorectal surgeon and dedicated advocate for cancer patients, as a new member of the organization’s board.

“The board and I couldn’t be happier that Dr. Marquez, a supporter of our organization since her arrival in Santa Fe, is joining us,” said Board Chair Bunny Terry. “She’s shown how dedicated she is to helping northern New Mexicans get to treatment, both professionally and personally. She’ll be a welcome addition to an already stellar board.”

A member of the Presbyterian Medical Group, Dr. Marquez brings a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to supporting cancer patients professionally and personally. She shares a deep passion for providing comprehensive care to those facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. She currently practices colorectal surgery, assisting patients in navigating the complexities of their diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and surveillance. Known for her dedication to addressing not only the clinical aspects of cancer but also the non-medical factors that often accompany the journey of cancer patients, such as financial and emotional support.

Dedication to cancer patients extends beyond her medical practice. Dr. Marquez’s previous work with the American Cancer Society, including education, financial support, housing, and transportation assistance, has demonstrated her commitment to making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. Now, she aims to continue this vital work locally in Santa Fe by joining CFFNM.

On a deeply personal note, Dr. Marquez has witnessed the impact of cancer within her own family, experiencing both the loss of loved ones and the inspiring resilience of those who fought valiantly against the disease. She recognizes that as a surgeon, she cannot always cure cancer, but can always care for and provide unwavering support to patients in their journey. Her fervor for this cause is evident in her willingness to serve the local community and ensure that cancer patients in New Mexico receive the care and support they deserve.

Dr. Marquez’s resume reflects an impressive career in the medical field. She holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, completed her General Surgery Residency at the University of Minnesota, and received a Masters in Clinical Research from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. She further honed her expertise through a Colorectal Fellowship at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Throughout her career, she has demonstrated unwavering dedication to her community and the medical field, serving in leadership roles such as Chair of General Surgery and Chair of Surgical Services at Santa Fe Medical Center.

Dr. Marquez is board certified in both colorectal surgery and general surgery. Her professional affiliations include being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Her contributions to medical literature are notable, with several published research articles and book chapters on various aspects of surgery and patient care.
