Long-time Executive Director of the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico (CFFNM), Corinne Collins, has announced her plan to retire. Collins joined the organization in 2007 and has led a significant expansion of its services in that time. CFFNM is a local, independent nonprofit organization that provides travel, lodging, and grocery assistance to cancer patients in northern New Mexico so they can access treatment in Santa Fe (location of the primary cancer treatment center for the northern part of the state). The Foundation also provides a number of support groups for patients and families who are struggling with the disease.
In the 13+ years that Collins led the organization, it has transformed from being a small start-up to a recognized leader in cancer support. The total budget for the organization has grown from $168K in 2007 to $1.3 million in 2020, with over 80% of the budget going directly to patient services. Travel miles reimbursed to patients increased from 58,000 in 2007 to 435,000 in 2019, while hotel nights provided to patients increased from 235 to 678 in that same period. Collins also oversaw the expansion of CFFNM’s largest fundraiser, the Sweetheart Auction, from a small reception in the organization’s conference room to an annual event at the convention center attracting 900 guests, making it one of the largest fundraisers in Santa Fe.
“Corinne has been the heart and soul of this organization for the past 13 years,” said Bud Hamilton, Board Chair. “Her empathy for the patients we serve, combined with her strategic leadership, have been critical in building a strong organization—both financially and organizationally. We will truly miss her, but wish her much happiness in her retirement.” At the request of the Board of Directors, Corinne will accept a position on the Foundation’s Board upon her retirement.
A search for a new Executive Director is underway and Collins plans to stay for several months to manage a smooth transition. “This has been a difficult decision for me as I love this organization and the critical work that we do. You get to see the real impact we have on families every day,” Collins explained. “But I also want to see more of the world and enjoy more time with my family, so this is the right time. I feel very confident that CFFNM is well-positioned for future success.”
Hamilton has been the Board Chair for the last 11 years and reports he plans to continue in that role. “That continuity will be very helpful as we move forward with a new Executive Director.”
